Why the German number is exact

It uses the modified Bavarian formula, which the German education ministers’ conference recognises and uni-assist actually applies to foreign transcripts. Change the lowest passing mark to match your university and the answer changes with it, exactly as theirs would.

Why the US number is not

There is no official conversion. WES and ECE read your transcript course by course, weighing your institution’s own grading norms, so any single number is an estimate. Treat it as a sense of where you stand, and let the evaluator produce the figure you put on an application.

Most converters flatter you

The common trick is to divide by your maximum and multiply by four. On a Nigerian 5-point scale that turns a 4.0 into a 3.2 — but a Nigerian 4.0 is a B average, which US universities read as about 3.0. This tool uses published bands instead of that shortcut.

What actually matters

Scholarship panels look at your classification and your story far more than a converted decimal. A 2:1 with a clear plan beats a First with none. Nobody is admitted or rejected on the third decimal place of a GPA.

Know your grade. Now find the money.

Most fully funded scholarships ask for a 2:1 or better, but several weigh work experience and your plan more heavily than marks.

Questions about grade conversion

How do I convert my grades to a US GPA?

Pick your system above and enter your mark. The tool gives an indicative US GPA from published equivalence bands.

For an actual application, a credential evaluator such as WES or ECE converts your transcript course by course, using your institution’s own grading norms. Universities trust that report; they will not accept a number from a website, including this one.

Is there an official conversion table?

Not for the US, no. Different evaluators use slightly different tables, and they weigh where you studied as well as what you scored.

Germany is the exception. The modified Bavarian formula is recognised by the education ministers’ conference and applied by uni-assist, so the German figure here is a real calculation rather than an estimate.

Why is my GPA lower here than on other calculators?

Because most of them divide your mark by the maximum and multiply by four. That is arithmetic, not conversion, and it flatters you.

A Nigerian 4.0 out of 5 becomes 3.2 that way. But a Nigerian 4.0 is a B average, and a US university reads it as roughly 3.0. Walking into an application with an inflated number helps nobody.

What GPA do I need for a scholarship?

Most fully funded awards ask for the equivalent of a UK 2:1, roughly a 3.0–3.3 US GPA. Gates Cambridge and Rhodes want considerably more.

Several weigh other things harder. Chevening leans on leadership and your career plan, DAAD on work experience, the Mastercard Foundation on community service. Average marks do not rule you out of those.

What is the lowest passing mark, and why does it matter?

It is the minimum score your university counts as a pass, and the Bavarian formula needs it. Change it and the German grade changes, because the formula measures how far above the pass mark you scored rather than the raw number.

It is on your transcript or your university’s regulations. Common values are 40% in much of Africa and South Asia, 50% elsewhere, and 3.0 on the Philippine scale.

My country is not listed. What do I do?

Pick the shape that matches. A mark out of 100 is a percentage wherever you sat it; a mark out of 20 works for France, Morocco, Tunisia, Lebanon and Senegal alike.

Then set the lowest passing mark to your own, which is what makes the German figure right for your institution rather than a generic one.
