The Roadmap to Switzerland
A unique federalist process. Your application moves from the Embassy to the specific "Canton" (e.g., Zurich) for the real decision.
Embassy Application
Submit three copies of your application to the Swiss representation near you. You must include proof of solvency (~CHF 21,000) and a written commitment to leave Switzerland after studies.
Cantonal Processing
The embassy sends your dossier to the Cantonal Migration Office (e.g., Zurich, Vaud). They are the ones who actually approve your stay. This step takes 8-12 weeks.
Visa D Authorization
Once the Canton approves, the Federal SEM authorizes the visa. You return to the embassy to stamp your passport with the National Visa D. This allows you to enter Switzerland.
Residence Permit (B)
Upon arrival, you must report to the Residents' Registration Office (Kreisbรผro) within 14 Days to book a biometrics appointment. You will then receive your plastic B-Permit.
