Post-Study Work & PR Pathways
The US immigration pipeline is highly lucrative but fiercely competitive. Discover how leveraging STEM OPT gives you the ultimate statistical advantage in the H-1B work visa lottery.
The OPT Work Visa Rules
Upon graduation, F-1 students are eligible for Optional Practical Training (OPT). This allows you to work full-time in a role directly related to your major without needing employer sponsorship upfront.
| Degree Classification | Stay Duration |
|---|---|
| Standard Degrees (Arts, Humanities) | 12 Months |
| STEM-Designated Degrees | 36 Months Total |
The Strategic STEM Advantage: Because the H-1B work visa is an annual lottery, having a standard 12-month OPT gives you only one chance to get selected. A 36-month STEM OPT gives you three separate chances at the H-1B lottery while earning a full US salary.
To stay long-term, your employer must enter you into the H-1B lottery. It is capped at 85,000 visas globally per year. However, holding a US Master's degree enters you into a special 20,000-seat exemption pool, significantly boosting your odds.
The Green Card (PR) Pathway
The US does not have a points-based PR system. To obtain a Green Card (Permanent Residency), your employer must sponsor you via the EB-2 or EB-3 categories. Crucial Note: Because Green Cards are subject to federal per-country limits, processing times vary drastically depending on your country of birth.
The Roadmap to the USA
From standardized testing to the nerve-wracking consular interview, follow this definitive 4-step checklist to secure your university admission and F-1 Visa.
01 Standardized Testing
6-9 Months PriorThe US relies heavily on standardized tests for holistic admissions and scholarship evaluations. Master's candidates generally need the GRE or GMAT, while undergrads may need the SAT or ACT. All international applicants must prove English proficiency via TOEFL, IELTS, or Duolingo.
02 The Application Process
Admissions PortalsUndergraduate students apply through the centralized Common App, submitting a personal statement and high school transcripts. Graduate applicants apply directly to the specific university department, submitting a Statement of Purpose (SOP) and Letters of Recommendation (LORs).
03 Securing the Form I-20
Crucial PrerequisiteAn admission letter alone is not enough for a visa. You must submit a Declaration of Finances showing liquid funds (bank statements or loan letters) covering your first year of estimated costs. Only then will the university issue your Form I-20.
04 The F-1 Consular Interview
Embassy / ConsulateAfter paying the $350 SEVIS fee and submitting the DS-160 application, you must book an interview at your local US embassy. A consular officer will interview you to assess your academic intent, financial stability, and most importantly, your intent to return home after graduation.
